Rail News: Passenger Rail
The French National Railways (SNCF) recently selected Bombardier Transportation to supply Ile-de-France commuter trains. The initial $1.7 billion order calls for Bombardier to supply 172 trains. If SNCF exercises options to purchase all 372 trains, the contract could reach $3.4 billion.
To operate on the Greater Paris/Ile-de-France suburban network, the trains will feature extra-wide cars with wide seats and doors. Each train will consist of seven or eight cars that can be operated as a double or triple unit, and carry up to 1,000 passengers.
The vehicles are scheduled to be delivered between 2009 and 2015.
