Bombardier Transportation and various partners recently obtained contracts in the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany totaling $5 billion.

London Underground Ltd. May 8 signed a Share Purchase Agreement with Metronet Consortium, comprising Bombardier, Balfour Beatty, Seeboard, Thames Water and WS Atkins, transferring to the private sector for 30 years the renewal, modernization, and maintenance of the railway’s infrastructure. As part of the deal, Bombardier will provide rolling stock, signaling and project management. The company expects to receive more than $4.4 billion during the 30-year term.

In another joint-venture deal, Bombardier and Australian train maker EDI-Rail May 11 received a $238.6 million order from the Western Australian Government to supply 31 three-car electric commuter trains for the southern leg of the Perth Urban Rail Development project. The contract includes 15 years’ maintenance, and construction of a maintenance and stabling facility. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2004 and conclude in 2006.

Meanwhile, a third partnership, this time between Bombardier, Siemens Transportation Systems and Alstom Transportation, received a $385 million order May 13 from Deutsche Bahn for 28 seven-car ICE T high-speed trains for use on Germany’s national network. Bombardier will provide 105 vehicles, including 49 trailers cars and 56 end cars. Siemens will manufacture the remaining 91 carbodies and provide electrical equipment for all 196 cars; Alstom will provide bogies and tilting systems. The ICE T trains, which reach a top speed of 145 mph, are scheduled to be delivered between June 2004 and February 2006.
