Brightline announced yesterday that it's moving forward with a new rail station in the city of Cocoa along Florida's Space Coast.

The high-speed passenger-rail company is beginning discussions with local and community leaders for the new station, which would be located in Brevard County, a Brightline official said in a prepared statement. Along with other stakeholders, city, county and Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) officials have begun to bring the region together to identify potential federal, state and local resources for a Cocoa station, said Katie Mitzner, Brightline director of public affairs.

"We agree the time is now to finalize a plan," she said.

The SCTPO has been interested in locating a Brightline station along the coast since 2016, when a study identified Cocoa as the best location, said SCTPO Executive Director Georganna Gillette in an article on FloridaToday.com.

"The SCTPO has been focused on increasing regional connections to move people safely and efficiently throughout the state of Florida," Gillette said. "We will continue to work diligently with our community and regional partners to secure funding to build a Brightline station in Cocoa."
