High-speed railroad Brightline today will mark the completion of its expanded route to Orlando, Florida.
Completion of the route makes way for opening passenger-rail service between Central and South Florida later this summer, Brightline officials said in a press release. The company broke ground on the project in 2019, with new stations opening in Boca Raton and Aventura in 2022.
Construction crews worked more than 7 million hours to finish the 170-mile corridor extension, which includes a vehicle maintenance facility, 56 bridges, three underpasses and upgrades to 156 grade crossings.
The route runs north from Miami through Aventura, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach to Orlando International Airport. Trains will travel at a top speed of 110 mph on a majority of the route.
Brightline also has completed the final rail and track cutover on the corridor, which integrates a second track. The company will continue testing trains on the corridor through July.
"Completing this project is the culmination of more than a decade of dedication, determination and hard work," said Brightline CEO Mike Reininger.
