CDPQ Infra Inc. has secured an option to purchase from CN a segment of the Souligny railroad right-of-way in Montreal's Mercier-Est neighborhood for the proposed REM de l'Est light-rail project.

The CN agreement means the proposed light-rail line can be rerouted along an existing rail corridor, which will avoid part of the line operating along the Sherbooke Street East commercial corridor, CDPQ Infra officials said in a press release.

The route adjustment of nearly 3 miles provides a solution to public concerns about the project.

The CDPQ and CN agreement covers a segment located between Honore-Beaugrand Street and Georges-V Avenue. Using this railroad right-of-way brings the proportion of the REM de l'Est route running on existing private or underground rights-of-way to 50%.

The proposed REM de l'Est is a 19.9-mile, CA$10 billion project related to the current Reseau express light-rail project under construction in Montreal. Construction work is expected to begin in 2023. CDPQ Infra is responsible for the planning, financing, construction and operation of infrastructure projects in Quebec and abroad.
