CSX has accepted most of Amtrak’s conditions regarding passenger-rail service in New England, where CSX has proposed to acquire Pan Am Railways.
Amtrak on Jan. 3 said it would oppose the CSX-Pan Am combination unless the Surface Transportation Board (STB) would impose seven conditions on the merger. The board held hearings this week on the CSX-Pan Am merger application.
In a Jan. 12 filing with the STB, CSX officials indicated they would accept six of Amtrak’s seven conditions connected to the Pan Am Railway system and existing CSX network.
Regarding the last condition, which relates to the Berkshire Flyer passenger-rail service in Massachusetts, CSX agreed to operation of the service as a “special train” from Memorial Day to Columbus Day in 2022.
The conditions Amtrak requested were made to “ensure that performance and expansion of Amtrak service is not harmed” if the STB agrees to the CSX-Pan Am merger, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said yesterday in an email.
"CSX has made a new proposal regarding the seventh condition: initiation of the planned, seasonal/weekend Berkshire Flyer service between Albany and Pittsfield. We are awaiting the details of CSX’s proposal, which will be reviewed by Amtrak and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, our state partner," Magliari said.
