CTA adds more station cameras, analyzes rail-car cameras

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) recently installed cameras at 24 Green Line stations, boosting the number of cameras installed system-wide so far to 1,657 at 73 stations.
The agency received $22.6 million in U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funds to enhance security and improve the surveillance network by using more cameras. By summer, the CTA plans to install at least one high-definition camera at every station; additional cameras will be installed system-wide later this year, beginning with the Brown and Red lines.
The cameras will provide real-time video to CTA’s control center, the Chicago Police Department and Office of Emergency Management and Communication.
In spring, the agency also plans to launch a pilot program to determine the feasibility of retrofitting passenger cars with cameras. Funded by $800,000 in Federal Transit Administration grants, the pilot will identify costs and optimal designs. New cars already on order will be equipped with cameras, CTA officials said.
