CTA kicks off second phase of Wilson Station reconstruction

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) earlier this week began the second phase of its $203 million project to reconstruct Wilson Station.

During this phase, crews will demolish and rebuild a portion of southbound track on the Red Line, agency officials said in a press release.

At the same time, the CTA has opened new temporary entrances on the north and south sides of Wilson Avenue, along with a new, larger platform for southbound Red and Purple Line Express riders.

Phase II is expected to be completed this fall, agency officials said.

The entire station reconstruction project calls for replacing the deteriorating facility built in 1923. The rebuilt station will serve as a new transfer point between Red and Purple Line Express train service.

With two elevators and wheelchair access at fare gates, the new station also will meet accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

As part of the project, crews will relocate and reconstruct 2,200 feet of elevated tracks, signals and supporting infrastructure to eliminate slow zones. 

The reconstruction project is expected to wrap up in late 2017.
