CTA modernizes Illinois Medical District Blue Line Station

The Chicago Transit Authority last week reopened the Illinois Medical District (IMD) Blue Line station, following the completion of a $23 million modernization project.

Begun in early 2017, the project called for improvements to the station house, its concourse and the station-to-platform ramp.

The station features improved accessibility for riders with disabilities, CTA officials said in a press release.

Crews also upgraded station and platform lighting, installed security cameras and provided CTA Bus and Train Tracker displays. In addition,  both auxiliary entrances received new flooring, wall and ceiling finishes, along with the latest fare-payment equipment and customer assistant kiosks.

Opened more than 50 years ago, the IMD Station is the third-busiest stop along the Blue Line's Forest Park branch. Last year, the station logged more than 750,000 entries.

The stop provides connections to four major hospital systems: the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the Rush University Medical Center and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.
