Yesterday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) officials to announce the agency will spend $10 million to hire 50 full-time police officers to patrol the system’s rail and bus stations.

“This investment in full-time officers … will help ensure the safety and security of all who rely on the CTA to get to work, school and to destinations across our great city,” Emanuel said in a prepared statement.

The 50 officers will be selected from the Chicago Police Academy and undergo six months of intensive training before joining the Public Transportation Section by spring 2012, CTA officials said.

“By enhancing the full-time dedicated police presence on our transit lines, we are increasing our ability to provide riders with the most secure and convenient transit service possible,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool.
