Calgary breaks ground on transit improvements

On Friday, the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada began construction on nine transit projects totaling $263.6 million.
Projects include constructing and rehabilitating stations and conducting related track work, increasing capacity for transit station platforms to handle longer trains, installing electronic fare collection capability and passenger information systems, completing transit signal projects and building a bus rapid transit system for southeast Calgary.
The Canadian government is contributing $87.9 million through the Building Canada Fund and the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Province of Alberta also is contributing up to $87.9 million toward the project, with the remaining funding coming from the city of Calgary.
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund projects must be completed by March 2011, while Building Canada Fund projects are expected to be completed by spring 2015.
