California light-rail system acquires UP trackage
advertisement
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Oct. 3 filed a verified notice of exemption to acquire from Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way and related improvements in Santa Clara Valley, Calif.
The 5.8 route miles would extend from the south side of San Carlos Avenue in San Jose to the northerly boundary of the State Route 85 overpass in Vasona. VTA also would acquire trackage — but not the right-of-way — of a small section of UP’s Vasona Branch.
VTA plans to construct and operate a light-rail extension on a portion of the route. UP would retain a perpetual, exclusive easement to continue freight operations on the line.
