California's Metrolink to negotiate engineer/conductor services contract with Amtrak

Last week, Metrolink’s board voted in favor of negotiating a contract for train engineer and conductor services with Amtrak.
The board determined that Amtrak negotiations presented the best option to meet a June 30, 2010, deadline imposed by the conclusion of a current services contract with Connex Railroad L.L.C. Amtrak served as Metrolink’s commuter-rail service operator between 1992 and 2004.
“Continuing with our longstanding model of outsourcing train operations will allow us to further focus our resources on all of our … safety measures, including an accelerated deployment of positive train control, installing inward-facing video cameras in all of our locomotives and lead passenger cars [and] developing additional sealed corridor projects,” said Metrolink Chairman Keith Millhouse in a prepared statement.
Southern California’s regional commuter-rail service provider, Metrolink is governed by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority.
