Caltrain narrows list of candidates for electrification project

Caltrain officials announced late last week that three firms have been placed on a short list as part of the design-build procurement process for the railroad's electrification project.

Six firms were originally pre-qualified to submit proposals for construction of the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project, according to a Caltrain press release.

Caltrain did not disclose the names of the three selected firms in the release.

The railroad now will go through a "best and final offer" process with the three firms before selecting the design-builder and awarding the contract. Following the negotiation process, Caltrain will propose a contract for award in summer or fall 2016.

The award date for a contract to purchase new electric trains will be determined after bids are received in December, Caltrain officials said.

The Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project is part of the Caltrain Modernization Program, which calls for electrifying the corridor between San Francisco and San Jose, Calif., purchasing new electric multiple units, upgrading the railroad's signal system and implementing positive train control.

By 2040, an electrified Caltrain system is expected to reduce the railroad's emissions by up to 97 percent and increase current weekday ridership with additional service, Caltrain officials said.
