Caltrain plans to keep busy this year by constructing a maintenance facility, upgrading stations, rehabilitating tunnels and installing security cameras.

In November, Caltrain broke ground on a $140 million maintenance facility in San Jose, Calif. This year, the agency plans to finish building a tunnel that will connect the repair shop, and a new operations building and control facility, and begin building the repair shop.

Caltrain is spending $8 million to rehabilitate four tunnels between the San Francisco and Bayshore stations. To be completed in June, the project includes reinforcing the tunnels with shotcrete — a mixture of cement, sand and steel fiber.

The agency also is installing closed-circuit televisions at the San Jose, Mountain View, San Mateo and San Francisco stations. At the Diridon station, Caltrain will install Talking Signs® — audible sign technology designed to enable visually impaired passengers to use a receiver to navigate through the facility.

In addition, Caltrain will continue to upgrade track between the San Francisco and Tamien stations.

Finally, the agency will begin design work for several projects, such as rehabilitating the Broadway and Burlingame stations, reconfiguring a platform at the Hillsdale station, closing the Bay Meadows station, and grade-separating track and building new stations in San Bruno and South San Francisoco.
