The government of Canada on May 11 announced plans to provide CA$26.8 billion for four major Metrolinx public transit projects in the greater Toronto area that are considered priorities for the province of Ontario, city of Toronto and York Region.

The government will provide CA$10.9 billion for the Ontario Line project; CA$5.6 billion for the Yonge North Subway Extension; CA$5.5 billion for the Scarborough Subway Extension; and CA$4.7 billion for the Eglinton Crosstown West project.

The government is contributing 40% of the cost for each project, up to a total of $10.4 billion. Federal funding for the Yonge North Subway Extension is conditional on treasury board approval, Infrastructure Canada officials said in a press release.

"Today, we are making the largest investment in public transit in the [area's] history, helping to kickstart our economy and create tens of thousands of jobs as part of the government's plan to create 1 million jobs," said Catherine McKenna, Canada's Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. "It will help get cars off the road, and the residents of Canada's largest community — especially essential workers, women, immigrants and youth — get around in faster, cleaner and cheaper ways."
