In response to a complaint by the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD), the Canadian Transportation Agency recently issued a decision on 46 mobility obstacles in VIA Rail Canada Inc.’s "Renaissance" passenger cars.



The agency considered 14 obstacles undue. The others were either found not undue, deferred, or designated safety concerns that fall under Transport Canada’s responsibility.



The agency asked VIA to answer questions about structural, operational and economic implications.



Pending answers, the agency could order the passenger railroad to take corrective measures.



Obstacles include inadequate maneuvering and floor space, lack of movable armrests, and narrow doors and aisles. In some cases, the obstacles might prevent people with disabilities from traveling on Renaissance trains, according to a prepared statement.
