Canadian governments, railways secure funds to continue service to First Nations reserve

The governments of Canada and Manitoba, and VIA Rail Canada Inc. and the Hudson Bay Railway Co. recently reached an agreement to continue passenger-rail service between The Pas and Pukatawagan, Manitoba, until year’s end.
Three local First Nation bands currently are improving the line and plan to purchase it at the end of the year; the governments, VIA Rail and Hudson Bay Railway would help the bands continue to provide existing service.
VIA Rail provides two passenger trips per week between The Pas and Pukatawagan, and Hudson Bay Railway operates freight service once a week. Rail is the only surface transportation mode available to First Nations reserve Pukatawagan. The service supports the area’s economy and provides a means for delivering supplies to the region’s people.
