U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) last week announced funding for two key transit projects in the Puget Sound region included in the federal 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which the U.S. House passed Dec. 23.
Sound Transit's Federal Way Link Light Rail Extension project will receive $329.14 million in federal funding, while its Lynnwood Link Light Rail Extension project will receive $254 million, officials from Cantwell’s office said in a press release.
The federal dollars will help ensure the Federal Way extension is fully funded three years ahead of schedule, they said. The project will create a transit pathway from Federal Way to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in about 15 minutes, as well as from Kent/Des Moines to downtown Seattle in about 42 minutes.
With the new funds, the Lynnwood extension is now on track to be fully funded by fiscal-year2024, Cantwell office officials said. That project calls for extending Link light-rail service to Snohomish County.
The dollars for the extensions will come from the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grants program.
