The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Cap Metro) will start construction next week on a $37 million project to build a new MetroRail station in downtown Austin, Texas.

Scheduled to open in spring 2021, the new station will have two platforms to expand capacity. The existing downtown station is the busiest yet smallest of the authority’s nine stations, Cap Metro officials said in a press release.

Other features of the new station will include custom canopies, ticketing, seating and digital message boards.

The project was initiated by a $50 million grant in 2014 from the Texas Department of Transportation. The new station will help ease traffic congestion and create "a more connected region," said Cap Metro Chairman Wade Cooper.
