The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District has awarded a $320,000 grant to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) to purchase standby power units to operate locomotives on layover at the Capitol Corridor/Amtrak Sacramento Valley Station.
The award will fund an additional four cleaner power units, bringing the total to eight. The funds will be included in the city of Sacramento’s contract with Granite Construction Inc. as part of a track relocation project, CCJPA officials said in a prepared statement.
Standby units use electricity to power equipment, which means the locomotives will not need to burn fuel when stationed for extended periods, said CCJPA Director Steve Cohn.
“Instead of idling and emitting harmful diesel emissions as crews clean and maintain the rail cars, passenger trains stopping at the remodeled Sacramento Valley Station next year will be powered by cleaner, quieter standby units,” he said.
