Last week, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) reached a milestone: 20 million riders on its passenger-rail services in the past 20 years.
“By riding Capitol Corridor trains instead of driving, our 20 million riders removed 1.4 billion vehicle miles off of congested northern California highways, preventing approximately 150,000 metric tons of CO2 from entering our atmosphere,” said CCJPA Managing Director David Kutrosky in a prepared statement.
The ridership milestone occurred six months after the CCJPA marked its 20th anniversary.
The Capitol Corridor serves 16 stations along a 170-mile rail corridor that connects Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. The agency partners with Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad, the California Department of Transportation and communities to provide intercity passenger-rail services.
