U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater Jan. 19 awarded Chicago Transit Authority a $320 million Federal Transit Administration full funding grant agreement to help rebuild CTA’s Blue Line.

The 6.6-mile Douglas Branch segment requires complete reconstruction, having operated for 102 years. CTA provides transportation for 54,000 employees and 115,000 residents within a half-mile radius of the branch’s 11 stations. University of Illinois’ 25,000 students also may access transportation throughout the Chicago area by way of the Douglas Branch.

CTA estimates Blue Line passengers would save 4.7 million hours in travel time annually after the project’s completion.
