Cleveland agency to break ground on Red Line station reconstruction project

Today, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for an $18.5 million project that calls for reconstructing the Cedar-University Rapid Transit Station on the Red Line.

Federal Transit Administration Administrator Peter Rogoff was expected to attend the event. The two-year project will be funded by a combination of federal, state and local dollars, including assistance from private industries. The largest funding source is a federal $10.5 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery II grant, which was announced in 2010.

"With ridership increases over the last 16 consecutive months [system-wide], and especially on the Red Line, this is a perfect time to be reconstructing this station," said GCRTA General Manager Joe Calabrese in a prepared statement.

Built in 1956, the station has had minor retrofits for repairs and partially complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The project involves rebuilding the station completely, and includes not only the station building and platform, but also the associated bus transfer loop and slip ramps, GCRTA officials said. The station is one of the highest transfer points in the agency’s system, they said.

Located in Rockefeller and Ambler Parks, the station is adjacent to the Case Quad of Case Western Reserve University.
