Cleveland's RTA begins to build new 55th Street station

Yesterday, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority broke ground for an $8.5 million station on East 55th Street to replace a facility built in 1955.

To be completed in fall 2011, the new station will continue to serve the Green and Red light-rail lines, Red heavy-rail line and two bus routes.

About 87 percent of the project’s cost will be covered by federal funds, including American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars. Albert M. Higley Co. will serve as general contractor for the project, which calls for building a new canopy, a stair and elevator tower at track level, an enclosed pedestrian bridge, an 863-foot-long platform and a parking lot.
