Congress extends SAFETEA-LU through mid-December

President Obama recently signed into law a continuing resolution that extends SAFETEA-LU through Dec. 18. The continuing resolution funds transit programs at FY2009 levels.

Congressional negotiators have not been able to enact a six-year authorization bill, or determine whether to pass a six-month or 18-month extension.

Congress also has been unable to approve the FY2010 Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill (H.R. 3288). The House and Senate have passed different versions of the bill, but the legislation still has not been sent to a House-Senate conference committee. Congress likely will need to combine the remaining appropriations bills into a large omnibus package before the end of the calendar year, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
