ConnDOT to recycle train station project materials; initiates quiet-car pilot

Several state-owned freight-rail lines will benefit from recycled track material generated by the West Haven train station project, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT).
Five miles of track are being replaced with new components, re-establishing the fourth main line track between New Haven and Milford, ConnDOT officials said in a prepared statement.
New overhead wiring and signaling also is being installed to operate passenger trains that will service the new West Haven station, which is slated to open in 2013.
ConnDOT will recycle the used materials and distribute them to seven railroads, including the Providence & Worcester Railroad and Housatonic Railroad Co., and four rail museums.
“This effort demonstrates the strong partnership between the[ConnDOT] and our freight rail partners,” said ConnDOT Commissioner James Redeker in a prepared statement. “The ability to recycle these materials will increase the safety of freight rail lines, reduce wear and damage of t he equipment, ensure that Connecticut industries receive their shipments of bulk materials in a timely fashion and reduce costs for our freight customers.”
Meanwhile, ConnDOT will debut quiet cars on select Shore Line East trains effective today. Launched as a pilot program, two morning and one evening weekday peak-hour Shore Line East trains will feature quiet cars.
