Yesterday, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and MTA Metro-North Railroad announced they will award a $522 million contract to Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. to design, build, test and deliver 210 M-8 passenger-rail cars.

The contract includes an option to purchase 170 additional cars, plus spare parts, special tools and test equipment. The state of Connecticut will fund 65 percent and Metro-North, 35 percent of the contract amount.

The contract still needs to be approved by MTA’s board and state of Connecticut. Cars are expected to enter service on Metro-North’s New Haven, Conn., line in 2009.
