The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and Gov. Ned Lamont last week broke ground on a new train station and track improvement project in Windsor Locks.
Located in downtown Windsor Locks next to an historic station, the new station will complement the town's transit-oriented development initiatives, CTDOT officials said in a press release.
The new station will include a high-level platform to allow for level boarding from every train car. The roadway and track improvement projects will address issues on the Hartford Line, allowing for later expansion.
"The Hartford Line has been a success story for Connecticut since it launched four years ago, and I remain committed to making further improvements to our state’s rail services," said Lamont. "The groundbreaking on this new train station in Windsor Locks is just another step in addressing our infrastructure needs and expanding amenities on our well-used rail lines."
The project cost is estimated at $87.14 million, with $59.11 million paid for by the State Bond Commission. CTDOT also will use a $17.49 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration and a $10.54 million contribution from Amtrak, which owns the tracks and rail line.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2025.
This is the first rail station project in the state to include a project labor agreement and workforce apprenticeship program, CTDOT officials said.
