The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) earlier this week announced measures to improve communication with CTrail Shore Line East riders and boost the reliability of the line's aging fleet.

Amtrak, which operates the line under a contract with CTDOT, next month will expand the hours at its maintenance shop to three shifts, seven days a week. In addition, Amtrak will increase overtime allowances to repair out-of-service locomotives and rail cars, department officials said in a press release.

"As a result of an Amtrak construction project and the ongoing rehabilitation of locomotives, the service has not been operating at levels customers have come to expect," CTDOT officials said.

To reduce the impact on riders when trains are unexpectedly canceled, buses will be on standby at stations "until more reliable service can be maintained," according to the release.

CTDOT management staff will ride Shore Line East trains for 30 days to "monitor the situation" and talk with riders directly. The line's customer service hours will be extended until the end of evening peak through October's end.

Today, CTDOT Commissioner Jim Redeker, other department staff and Amtrak officials will be at New Haven Union Station to meet with riders.
