Connecticut Gov. Malloy announces grants to boost transit-oriented development

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy earlier this week announced that 11 projects in towns and cities across the state will receive $15 million to support transit-oriented development (TOD) projects.

The funding package includes $1,847,000 for the construction of a retaining wall and surface parking lot across from an Amtrak station in Windsor Locks.

That work is aimed at supporting the redevelopment of three parcels in the town's Main Street Commercial District near the station.

The state also has allocated $200,000 for pedestrian infrastructure improvements along Bradley Road in Madison. Those upgrades include a new sidewalk extending from the Shore Line East's Madison Station to Wall Street.

Combined with earlier grant awards, the funding will enable the creation of a contiguous sidewalk network in a large portion of Madison Center and the area surrounding the train station, according to a press release issued by Malloy's office.

Other projects that will receive funding include the East Avenue TOD plan in Norwalk. That project will receive $125,000 for analysis and development of a TOD plan for the area surrounding MTA Metro-North Railroad's East Norwalk Station.

Additionally, the state is providing $55,000 for the design of an on-site wastewater disposal system for a former Unilever factory adjacent to the Shore Line East's station in downtown Clinton. The system is intended to facilitate a transit-oriented redevelopment of the property.
