Construction has begun on the future Confederation GO station in Hamilton, Ontario.

The Hamilton station will help reduce gridlock and connect people to jobs, housing and transit, Ontario government officials said in a press release. The GO Transit station will feature an accessible island platform with canopies, pedestrian tunnel, pick-up and drop-off areas and stair access from the street.

The new rail station is part of Metrolinx's GO Expansion initiative to create a more integrated transit network in Hamilton, which is one of Ontario’s fastest-growing areas, provincial officials said. Plans are underway to increase GO Transit rail service from Hamilton to Toronto and Niagara Falls.

"Hamilton has seen significant growth as a destination to live, work and play in, which requires more transit options to support residents and visitors alike," said Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

The province is working with CN to facilitate access to the corridor west of the Burlington GO Transit station in order to expand service into Hamilton.
