Construction begins on Kansas City streetcar facility

KC Streetcar Constructors recently began construction on the Singleton Vehicle Maintenance Facility as part of the KC Downtown Streetcar Line in Kansas City, Mo.

Named after architect and longtime transit advocate E. Crichton Singleton, the facility will be a two-story full-service station for repairing, servicing and maintaining the streetcars, KC Streetcar Constructors officials said in a press release.

The 24,982-square-foot facility will include 10,966 square feet of work area, 7,635 square feet of equipment and storage areas, and 6,381 square feet of office space. Construction is slated for completion in summer 2015.

Located at 3rd Street and Holmes, the site will enable ground access to the upper and lower levels of the facility because of the terrain's slope, KC Streetcar Constructors officials said.

When completed, the two-mile, north-south KC Downtown Streetcar starter line will travel along Main Street and connect the River Market to Crown Center and Union Station. It also will serve the Central Business District, the Crossroads Art District and the Power and Light District.
