Yesterday, officials from Minnesota’s Metropolitan Council announced they are preparing to begin construction on the 11-mile Central Corridor light-rail project in late summer or fall.

Construction on the western three miles of the line is now set to begin in September, starting with preparing a bridge to accommodate the light-rail trains. In December, crews will begin work to tie in the Central Corridor line from the Hiawatha light-rail line.

The bulk of the work on the western part of the project will begin in spring 2011. Construction for the eastern part of the project is slated to begin in July.

The line is designed to link downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis, with service expected to begin in 2014. The line will connect with the Hiawatha line at the Metrodome station in Minneapolis and the Northstar commuter-rail line at the new Target Field station.
