Contractors begin work on Tacoma bridge

Washington State Department of Transportation and Tacoma Narrows Contractors, a joint venture comprising Bechtel and Kiewit, broke ground Oct. 5 on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge design/build project, which includes construction of a 5,400-foot suspension bridge, partial retrofit of a parallel bridge and 2.5 miles of roadway approach.

Plans for the parallel bridge include construction of two eastbound general-purpose, one high-occupancy vehicle, and one bicycle/pedestrian lanes. The bridge also would have the structural capacity to accommodate future light rail or additional highways lanes.

A Parsons/HNTB joint venture received notice to proceed Sept. 25. The partners will provide final design, engineering support during construction and construction quality assurance.

Tacoma Narrows Constructors, a joint venture comprising Bechtel and Kiewit, is the main contractor/design-builder hired by project-owner Washington DOT.

The project is slated for completion in mid-2008.
