Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) last month was recognized by Mainspring’s Global Light Rail Awards with the Vision of the Year award for its D2 Subway project, a proposed second light-rail alignment through downtown Dallas.

The award recognized excellence and innovation in the global light and urban rail sector, DART officials said in a press release. Mainspring is a marketing services company based in the United Kingdom. The company hosts the UK Light Rail Conference and Dinner at the Roundhouse, a rail networking event.

The D2 Subway will help to ensure the sustainability of the DART system by providing needed capacity and improving system reliability and passenger service through downtown Dallas between Victory Park to Deep Ellum, according to DART’s project website.

DART is preparing the final environmental impact statement for the D2 Subway project. In October, the agency reached 30% completion of the preliminary design.

Once the Federal Transit Administration clears the project's environmental impact, DART can advance to the next stage of development: engineering. DART then can proceed with detailed design and construction.

The D2 Subway is expected to enter revenue service in 2025.
