DART, TRE open historic-themed Irving station

Irving, Texas, residents and officials joined Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) representatives Nov. 13 in officially opening Trinity Railway Express’ (TRE) latest station.

In partial use since mid-September when TRE expanded commuter service to Richland Hills, the station offers 500 parking spaces, 18 kiss-and-ride spaces, bike racks, four bus bays and pay phones on the boarding platform.

The station’s décor was designed to reflect the history of black Freedmen who settled the area in the mid-1800s. Bear Creek, which once flowed through the area, is depicted by stained concrete and colored pavers; limestone pavers engraved with names of people from the area’s history follow the shoreline.

TRE, formed through a partnership between DART and Fort Worth Transportation Authority, is the area’s commuter rail system. The final leg of the planned extension connecting Dallas and downtown Fort Worth is scheduled to open in late 2001.
