DART plans to open seven stations July 1

Dallas Area Rapid Transit plans July 1 to open seven new stations — four in North Dallas and three in Richardson, Texas. And it’ll begin celebrating June 29 with Super Saturday festivities in both cities.

The project — the largest DART’s undertaken since its 20-mile starter system opened in 1996 - 1997 — will extend DART’s Red Line more than nine miles and will introduce aerial stations to the Dallas area, including Park Lane, Walnut Hill and Forest Lane stations in Dallas, and Spring Valley Station in Richardson.

Each station has its own design theme, developed with the help of residents from surrounding neighborhoods. For example, Walnut Hill Station will serve Presbyterian Hospital and local retirement communities, so the platform displays words of healing and wellness within illuminated steel columns.

Spring Valley Station was inspired by the original Spring Creek, and includes flowers and vines in the columns and paving designs. And a transit plaza at Galatyn Station, which is in the heart of the Telecom Corridor™, includes columns of stainless steel bundles representing conduit wires.

Attractions planned for Super Saturday include live music, concessions, face-painting, vendor booths and DART safety presentations. One-week free passes for DART trains and buses will be distributed as long as supplies last; attendees also may register to win a six-month pass.

But DART’s not done growing just yet. More openings planned for this year (including a Blue Line extension to Forest/Jupiter and Downtown Garland Stations scheduled for Nov. 18, and another Red Line extension to Bush Turnpike, Downtown Plano and Parker Road Stations, Dec. 9) will more than double DART’s system to 44 miles and 34 stations.

And DART has additional plans to further expand through 2010.
