The District of Columbia's DC Streetcar recently marked it's fifth anniversary. The occasion was noted by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) officials.
The streetcar operates along a 2.2-mile line and provides free daily trips in the H Street NE/Benning Road Corridor, from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue.
Since its launch on Feb. 27, 2016, the DC Streetcar has carried more than 4.4 million passengers. In its fiscal-year 2021 budget, D.C. has allotted $137 million for the streetcar system, including an extension to the Benning Road Metro Station, according to a DDOT press release.
Last year, the DDOT implemented new safety protocols on the DC Streetcar in response to the public health emergency caused by COVID-19. All passengers are required to wear masks while riding the streetcar and vehicles are disinfected daily.
