Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Bishop Arts District streetcar extension will open Aug. 29, the agency announced yesterday.

Passengers will be able to access the new route on a "preview run" on Aug. 27.

The 0.7-mile route runs from the streetcar's current terminus at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center to the Bishop Arts District shopping and entertainment area in the city's Oak Cliff neighborhood.

The entire route from the Dallas Union Station to Bishop Arts will remain free.

The Dallas Streetcar is the first streetcar project in the United States to use wireless traction power from an on-board stored energy system. The city's streetcars use the stored energy as they cross the Houston Street Viaduct bridge.

Brookville Equipment Corp. is providing streetcar vehicles for DART.
