The Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) last week began operating quiet zones for the University of Colorado A Line at certain crossings in Denver.

Last month, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved RTD's requested waiver for constant warning time devices at nine crossings in Denver on the commuter-rail line.

While horns will no longer be sounded as a matter of routine, operators reserve the right to do so in any event they consider unsafe or if maintenance workers are along the tracks. as required by federal regulations, RTD officials said in press release. Gates, lights and bells will continue to activate and sound at the crossings as a warning to motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area.

RTD and city of Aurora officials continue to work with the FRA to establish quiet zones on the University of Colorado A Line’s two remaining crossings, both located in Aurora.
