U.S. Department of Transportation March 17 announced a $54.4 million Federal Transit Administration grant for Denver Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) Southeast Corridor Light-Rail Project.



Specifically, funds would be used for right-of-way appraisal, relocation and acquisition; design and project management services; and construction of structures.



The Southeast Corridor would extend the existing system 19 miles from an existing LRT station at Interstate 25 and Broadway along I-25 to Lincoln Avenue and I-25 in Douglas County. A spur line would run along I-225 to Parker Road in Arapahoe County.



The project also would include building 14 stations and a maintenance facility, upgrading the existing system and purchasing 34 light-rail vehicles. The system, which would be double-tracked and operate in an exclusive, grade-separated right-of-way, would connect with the 5.3-mile Central Corridor in downtown Denver at the Broadway Station; and with the 8.7-mile Southwest Corridor at I-25 and Broadway.



Service on the Southeast Corridor project is expected to begin June 30, 2008.
