The Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) will hold 16 public hearings this month to discuss a proposed action plan aimed at closing an $18 million budget deficit for fiscal-year 2011.

The action plan includes a proposed fare increase; possible service reductions; a third consecutive year without salary increases; hiring limitations; using some operating reserve funds; continuing fuel cost hedging, voluntary staff furloughs; exploring new revenue generating opportunities; and establishing a board financial stability committee to determine the best way to expand future resources.

The board is expected to make a final decision on belt-tightening measures at an Oct. 26 meeting.
