Amtrak yesterday announced a carry-on pet program for Pacific Surfliner riders in Southern California.

Beginning May 20, riders can bring their dog or cat weighing up to 20 pounds on the train for $26. To comply with Amtrak's national pet policy, a limited number of pet reservations are available per train, and each rider is limited to one reservation per trip. Pets are allowed in all cars except for business class and the cafe car. They must remain in a carrier at all times underneath the seat.

"Nobody likes to be left behind, which is why we are pleased to expand Amtrak’s pet program to Pacific Surfliner trains," said Amtrak Vice President of California Jeanne Cantu in a press release.

The Pacific Surfliner travels through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
