Draft environmental report released for Metro Gold Line Foothill light-rail project

The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority is soliciting public feedback on the recently released Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Metro Gold Line Foothill light-rail extension from Azusa to Montclair, Calif.
The draft EIR evaluates the environmental impacts of the proposed 12.3-mile light-rail extension, which would include six new stations and two new grade-separated crossings. The evaluation proposes mitigation measures to lessen impacts where possible, and “concludes that a number of impacts cannot be mitigated to less than significant level,” construction authority officials said in a prepared statement.
“This is an important step in our effort to extend light rail deeper into the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys,” said Doug Tessitor, the authority’s chairman.
The draft EIR is available for public review on the authority’s website. Comments will be accepted through Oct. 5.
The authority also will host public meetings on Sept. 20 and Sept. 24 to solicit comments.
The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension is a 24-mile extension of the Metro Gold Line light-rail system. The project is planned in two segments: from Pasadena to Azusa, and from Azusa to Montclair. The first segment is fully funded by the Los Angeles County’s Measure R and is on schedule to be completed in late 2015. The second segment is still in the planning stage and not yet funded.
