Edmonton selects 3 bidders for light-rail vehicle RFP

City of Edmonton, Alberta, officials have shortlisted three bidders to participate in the request for proposals for the design and manufacturing of up to 53 new high-floor light-rail vehicles (LRVs) that will operate as part of the Edmonton Transit Service.
The Edmonton Evaluation Committee has shortlisted the following teams: Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (CAF); Hyundai Rotem Co.; and Siemens Mobility Ltd., according to a city press release. In 2024, the request for qualifications received six submissions from international bidding teams.
The high-floor LRVs are necessary to replace the 37 aging U2 models that have been operating on Capital Line and Metro Line for more than 45 years, city officials said.
Up to 16 of the 53 LRVs are being procured to accommodate service growth for the Capital Line South Extension and Metro Line Northwest Extension. City leaders hope to award the LRV contract late this year, with delivery of vehicles anticipated in 2028 and 2029.
