United Kingdom-based leasing company HSBC Rail UK Ltd. Feb. 14 awarded Bombardier Transportation a $322 million contract for 127 diesel-electric multiple-unit cars, which HSBC plans to lease to National Express Group for use on its Midland Mainline from Sheffield, via Derby and Nottingham, to London.
The contract also includes a four-year maintenance portion; if that portion were extended to its maximum 15 years’ duration, the contract’s value would top $600 million.
Under contract terms, the cars would be designed to operate at 124 mph. Deliveries would begin in second-quarter 2004 and conclude by January 2005.
