Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Caltrain and Stadler US representatives recently visited the FRA Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, where Caltrain's new Stadler-built EMU trainsets are undergoing dynamic testing.
The new multilevel EMU trainsets will serve as the foundation for California’s first modern electrified railroad, Caltrain officials said in a press release. The state-of-the-art catenary electric trains are in the final testing stages with Association of American Railroads partner Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI). Stadler is manufacturing the trains at its Salt Lake City facility.
Caltrain officials hope the new trains will help the agency reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 110 metric tons every day by 2040 and triple ridership to 180,000 every weekday. The transit corridor project will add the equivalent capacity of five and a half new freeway lanes on the U.S. 101.
"Cleaner, greener, quieter, more comfortable, and more efficient, these trains will deliver an across-the-board improved riding experience with features such as Wi-Fi, improved passenger information displays, additional storage, and power sources at every seat, benefiting the communities we serve for decades to come," said Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard.
