The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced that it will allocate $300 million to improve capacity on the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) heavy-rail system between Oakland and San Francisco, California.
Upon final FTA approval of a construction grant agreement, BART’s Transbay Corridor Core Capacity project will receive the fiscal-year 2018 funding through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation press release.
"This project will allow BART to operate up to 30 trains per hour through the Transbay Tube, helping to alleviate crowding and accommodate growing ridership,” said FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams in the press release.
BART currently operates 223 trains per hour on the corridor, according to the project website.
In addition announcing the allocation, FTA officials said they are advancing the Transbay project to the engineering phase, which is the second phase of the CIG program. Projects accepted into CIG must go through a multiyear, multistep process to be eligible for consideration to receive program funds.
FTA has advanced funding for 23 new CIG projects since January 2017, totaling $6.3 billion in funding commitments.
