The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced a $60.76 million federal funding grant agreement (FFGA) with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) for platform extensions at 28 stations along the Red and Blue lines. The $128.8 million project will enable DART to operate longer trains to accommodate more riders, FTA officials said in a press release. The stations currently can only handle two-car trains, but the work will boost platform capacity to three-car trains.The project involves 22 at-grade, four aerial and two below-grade stations. Construction began in spring and is expected to conclude in late 2021."Commuters in Dallas can now look forward to longer trains and a better commute," said FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams. "We are proud to partner with the Texas Department of Transportation and DART to accommodate growing transit ridership and promote economic development as jobs and population in the Dallas area continue to increase."The FTA will provide the funding through the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program. Projects accepted into the program must go through a multi-year, multi-step process to be eligible for funding consideration.Including the FFGA with DART, the FTA now has executed 15 CIG agreements involving more than $3.4 billion in program funding.
